Ponus Ridge 7th Graders Honor Beloved Mentors at Unsung Heroes' Night

Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy students found many shared characteristics between the fictional characters in their language arts/English classes and the real-world mentors in their own life.

Ponus 7th grade students presented these similarities to families and staff earlier this month during an inspiring “Unsung Heroes’ Night.” The event was designed to bridge classroom literacy analysis, part of the StudySync curriculum, with the real-world mentors who shape our community.

Throughout Unit 2, students have explored how authors use writing to navigate complex relationships. As part of their Extended Writing Projects, students were challenged to write a literary analysis comparing the traits of fictional protagonists to the personality traits of a beloved hero in their own lives.

The evening served as a vibrant showcase of critical thinking, featuring students summarizing the texts they read and sharing excerpts from their own original writing. Attendees were invited to participate in a gallery walk where student-designed digital posters and written essays stood as tributes to their heroes.

By connecting the characters on the page to the people in our neighborhood, our students demonstrated that the themes of resilience and love found in their curriculum are very much alive in the world around them.

The “Unsung Heroes’ Night” was more than a celebration of beloved, real-world heroes. It was a powerful opportunity for students to also practice their critical thinking and effective communication skills, the first two competencies of the NPS Portrait of a Graduate initiative implemented across the district.

This event also reflects the heart of Norwalk Public Schools’ PK-12 Literacy Vision, which emphasizes that literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning and success. The district believes every student must have daily opportunities to read, write, speak, and listen in meaningful ways.
