Technology Initiative

Every student and staff has received a 5G VILS Chromebook to use daily at school and at home.  Each teacher also has a Dell computer and some classes are equipped with desktops.  Every classroom has a Viewsonic Board installed that is interactive with many features to enhance instruction.  The goal is to increase the use of technology in student projects.  In order to achieve this, the VILS Coach, Student Tech Team and the TLC can assist teacher training to help move their lessons the SAMR ladder.  Besides training, the VILS Coach can co-teach and mentor other teachers to meet the technological needs of students.  The goal is to prepare students for future jobs by increasing project based learning in the classroom and student choice of final project as their assessment using a variety of technology tools.

STEAM Initiative

As Ponus is transitioning into a K-8 STEAM Academy, the Ponus staff and students designed and piloted two STEAM transdisciplinary units during the school year of 2020-21.  For the 2021-22 school year, we will be creating and implementing four units.  The following includes our STEAM Vision, Principles of Learning, Beliefs and Curriculum.

Our STEAM Vision:

“STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of future generations!”

Our STEAM Principles of Learning:

Student and adult learners of the Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy will construct meaning and demonstrate understanding by:

  • providing opportunities for choice, productive struggle, and revision to foster and develop new understanding, while applying a growth mindset that encourages flexible thinking and perseverance.

  • engaging in problem-based learning approaches through hands-on experiences that foster personal interests and inspire creativity.

  • building an environment that cultivates positive relationships and promotes collaboration where students advocate for their own learning.

  • We believe in the love of learning.

  • We believe in a growth mindset for you and your students.

  • We believe that children impact the world

  • We believe in taking ownership for our learning.
